Why won't my Iphone connect with my computer?

For some reason my iphone won't connect with my computer, i tried different cords so i know the cord isn't the problem, I thought it was the computer because it was older and a little glitchy but i recently got a new one and downloaded itunes and my phone still won't connect. I plug it in and it connects at first but then disconects. Whats strange is my phone will show that its charging because its connected to a power sorce but no device shows up in itunes and my computer does not recognize anything pluged in to the usb port. So what do i do? is there a setting that i'm missing? i really need to backup my phone so i can get alot of the pictures off of it but for some reason it won't work for me.
