How to connect two different generation computers through LAN?

I have two desktop computers, one is using Pentium 4 processor and a matching motherboard while the other computer has core 2 duo processor and Intel\'s DG 31 motherboard. An operator told me that I cannot connect these two machines with LAN unless I change the configuration of the older one. Also, he said, the older one does not support broadband connection. Is that even true? How to connect two different generation computers through LAN?
You can connect ANY 2 computers via a lan (as long as they have a lan port!)

THATS THE WHOLE PONT OF NETWORKS!!

And 'Supporting Broadband' is just rubbish,

You either connect to the router via Cat5 (network cable) or

usb to a bband modem.
