Internet not connecting with ethernet cable?

This is a two part question. Please excuse me if there's any confusion, I'm not really good when it comes to technical terms related to computers...

First question: I normally use my laptop that connects to the web through a wireless network. The problem is that when my roommate gets on his computer which is connected to a modem, I always end up disconnecting and I won't be able to get back on. The wireless network says that the signal is still excellent, but I won't be able to connect to it. So can anyone tell me what's causing the problem? Is it the wireless router?

Second question: When I try to connect my laptop to the web using a ethernet cord, my laptop says it detects the source and is connected, but nothing loads when I try to do something online. I'm pretty sure its not a firewall problem, I have disabled them before to see if I could still connect, but no luck.

Any help would be awesome, this problem is really beginning to frustrating.Internet not connecting with ethernet cable?
The main reason, your roommate is also connected to you with the same line from you. So you share bandwidth with him. if you have 512kbps probably he downloads all the time when he's computer is on. probably he consumes or occupied the allocated bandwidth. That's why you are still connected but having difficulty loading from the net. It means there are too many computer shared on a single line.

or You are connected wireless thru router. maybe you router internet connection is or was removed by your friend in order to connect his modem to have access in the web.

If all are connected properly. Try to restart your router and try to reconnect again wireless. if unable, ask your roommate to turn of his computer wifi maybe that interfere with your router signal. or try to set you router in different channels.

you can check if you have connection to the net by clicking the start button and pick the run. and type cmd, another window will open in a DOS format. encode ';ping www.yahoo.com'; you can see the time span the signal was sent and receive and if it is connected in the net.
